PART II

JOHN THE BAPTIST AND JESUS FROM BIRTH TO MANHOOD

B.C. 6 TO A.D. 8

4 The Angel's Intimation to Zechariah From Birth to Manhood

The Temple Jerusalem; B.C. 6

Luke 1:5-25

5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest name Zechariah, the division of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.

8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared to him the angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him . 13 But the angel said to him, "Be not afraid, Zecheriah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John."

14 And you will have joy and gladness,
and many will rejoice at his birth;
for he shall drink no wine or strong drink,
and he will be filled with the holy spirit,
even from his mother's womb.
And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God,
and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah,
to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children
and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,
to make ready for the Lord a people prepared."

18 And Zechariah said to the angel , "How shall I know this for I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." 19 And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak with you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day these things come to pass, because you do not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple. 22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs them and remained dumb. 23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home.

24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself saying, 25"Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach upon men."

5. The Angel's Reassuring Message to Mary Concerning the Birth of Jesus

Nazareth; the end of B.C. 6 or Beginning of B.C. 5

Luke 1.26-38

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the Virgin's name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" 29 And she was greatly troubled at the saying and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son and you shall call his name Jesus.

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High;
and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever;
and of his kingdom there will be no end."

34 And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" 35 And the angel said to her,

"The holy spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the most high will overshadow you;
therefore the child to be born will be called Holy,
the Son of God.

36 And behold , your kinsman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a Son: and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible." 38 And Mary said, "Behold, I am the hand maid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

6. Mary's visit to Elizabeth:

Judea; the Beginning of B.C. 5

Luke 1:39-56

39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the country, to a city of Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy spirit 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is he fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."

46 And Mary said,

(The magnificat)

"My soul magnifies the Lord.
and my spirit rejoices in god my Savior,
for he has regarded the low estate of his hand maiden.
for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed,
for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name
and his mercy is on those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown his strength with his arm,
he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,
he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree;
he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.
he has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his posterity for ever"

56. And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home.

7. The Birth of John the Baptist

Judea; the spring of B.C. 5

Luke 1:57-80

57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son. 58 And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. 59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have name him Zechariah after his father, 60 but his mother said, "Not so he will be called John." 61 And they said to her, "None of your kindred is called by this name." 62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called. 63 And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And they all marveled. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. 65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea; 66 and all who heard then laid up in their hearts saying, "What then will this child be?:" For the hand of the Lord was with him.

67-79 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy spirit, and prophesied, saying,

(the beneficat)

"Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has visited and redeemed his people,
and has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David,
and he spoke by the mouth of the holy prophets from of old,
that we should be saved from our enemies,
and from the hand of all who hate us;
to perform the mercy promised our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant,
the oath which he swore to our father Abraham,
to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
might serve him without fear,
in holiness and righteousness
before him all the days of our life.
And you child will be called the prophet of the most high;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways.
to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,
because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun will come to us from Heaven
to shine of those living in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace."

8. The angel's explanatory advice to Joseph about the Savior's Birth.

Nazareth BC. 5

Math 1:18-25a

18. This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit; 19. because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her publicly, but wanted to divorce her quietly.

20. But after he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife because what is in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you will give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

22. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel"

(which means, 'God be with us.')

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as wife, 25 but he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son.

9. The Birth of Jesus.

Bethlehem; the autumn of BC. 5

Luke 2:1-7

1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria). 3 And everyone went to his own town to register.

4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him was were expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her first-born, a son. She wrapped him in swaddling cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

John 1: 14. So the Word became flesh and lived for a while among us.

10. The angelic Announcement to the Shepherds and their response.

Near Bethlehem

Luke 2:8-20

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel of the Lord said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ of the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 "Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told to them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered on them in their heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

11. The Circumcision and Naming of Jesus.

Eight days after birth

Matt 1:25b, Luke 2:21

21 On the eight day , when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

12. The Presentation of the Baby Jesus in the Temple

Jerusalem, forty days after birth

Luke 2:22-39a

22 When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every first born male is to be consecrated to the Lord"), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons."

25 Now there was a man who in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord Christ. 26 Moved by the Spirit, he went to the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

"Sovereign Lord, as our have promised
you now dismiss your servant in peace.
30 for my eyes have seen your salvation
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all people,
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel."

33 The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him.

34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of so many people in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce you own soul too."

36 There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then she was widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped night and day, fasting and praying. 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by Law of the Lord, they returned...

13. The Visit of the Wise Men.

Matt. 2: 1-12

1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the East and have come to worship him."

3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teacher of the Law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:

'But you Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'"

7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I may go and worship him."

9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. They opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

14. The Flight of Joseph and his Family into Egypt & the Slaughter of the Children.

Matt. 2: 13-18

13 When they had gone, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, "Get up," he said and go down to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."

14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet:

"Out of Egypt I called my son."

16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:

18 "A voice was heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more."

15. The Return of Joseph and His Family From Egypt to Nazareth.

BC. 4

Matt 2:19-23

19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the Land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."

21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream. (Luke 2:39b and he returned to) he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23 and went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."

When they did not find him the went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you."
